I'm a pretty good guy. I can do a fair bit on my own. If you google "Andrew Yager" (without the quotes even) at google.com.au, this blog is the first result. That's pretty cool! In fact, I'm listed on quite a few pages. This week I made it onto the contributors list for the OfBiz project. I'm pretty happy about that. I cooked five meals at home, tidied my kitchen, helped clean the house, cleaned my office, went back to work, updated the PY website ... There is a lot I can boast about. But should I?
How often is it that we start doing something well, and feel like we can take off and do it on our own. I was reading 1 Corinthians this morning with Bess. I mean, it's not wrong for me to feel good about all of these things - I mean, they are all good things! But it's better for me to realise that I am nothing without Christ. God didn't choose me for my good programming skills. He didn't choose me because I can be listed in the top 10 on Google. He didn't choose me because I could cook, clean, sew, tidy - or do anything. He choose me, because he did. What struck me even more is how special is it when he chooses someone who isn't as accomplished as I am. When he chooses someone that isn't an academic success. When he chooses someone who can't program, who can't make the top 10, who can't cook, clean or sew. Someone who doesn't have a four bedroom house to call their own. Who can't use a computer... when he chooses these people, not because of what they have done, but merely because he has set his eyes on them. Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things — and the things that are not — to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God — that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:26 - 31 (NIV) |
